‘Ropavieja’, meaning ‘old clothes’: a traditional Hispanic dish, often made using leftovers from other dishes that have already been cooked. In this case, I used magazines from several decades ago, cutting out pieces, mixing them up and reassembling them to create new images.
The creative process was straightforward. I began by collecting pages from various magazines from the 1980s and 1990s, from which I cut out photographs, headlines and various images. Once I had gathered all the fragments, the new headlines emerged naturally as I combined them with one another. Finally, I stuck the headlines and images onto individual sheets of paper, resulting in a collection of nine collages.
The images in the collection have a sarcastic tone that invites reflection. Using phrases taken from advertisements, they highlight false promises and blatant messages. Taken out of context and then re-contextualised, these images mock the media’s exploitative consumerism and seek to expose it.
